The mood swings and irritability is definitely coming from your lack of sleep. Maybe you should see a doctor. I used to have bad anxiety attacks at night and I would wake up every hour and a half...all night long, for weeks at a time. I was crabby as hell.

If the insomnia is caused by changes in your body, you might want to consider going to the doctor.  Insomnia could be an indication of a thyroid problem or some other easily treatable health problem.

The only thing I could think of that would help you would be to exercise during the day. This would tire you out easier therefore theoretically allowing you to get to sleep easier.
